One more Noir Year's

So Funimation released a Bluray of Noir as well...

It's got the 5.1 Japanese soundtrack with subtitles that the Japanese box set didn't, and I thought "this show has brought me so much, so why not spend a little more on it..."

And here we are... on the verge of 2016 and still trying to watch Noir on Noir Year's Eve.

I'm trying to skip around, but I'm finding I don't want to skip much. But knowing that I can't manage to stay awake for a "full marathon", I'll have to make some decisions soon.

I've said over and over these last few years that I've mainly moved on. But I still think about it, and I still felt obsessed enough that I wanted to do this yet again tonight.

Noir in HD. It's easy to take for granted now that I've spent plenty on it, but at the time, it was some sort of unachievable pinnacle.

2015 was a year of treading water; staying put like I have for so long. My career has atrophied, my health is suspect, and I'm in a rut and I'm bored. All within my control, ultimately, but I've been to lazy to address it.

Dunno what will happen in 2016. Will I watch Noir again in a year? Will there ever be another Bee Train production? Will I still be gainfully employed? We'll see, I guess.

Peace and luck for another year, at least.

The last Noir Year's Eve?

I picked up the BluRay of Cowboy Bebop and it's as excellent as you'd imagine.

And I think Noir is no longer my favoritist show ever...

I finally made it through a Noir Year's Eve, though I only started with the Tawain arc, which more or less matches up when I passed out during my attempt at "Noiriversarry" with this BluRay set.

But I have to be honest; I'm not in love with Noir anymore.

Earlier this year, I got a chance to meet up with an old crush of mine. I was completely freaked out about the possibility: she was gone and far away for a very long time and my old obsession still lingered and I was anxious, to say the least. But spending time with her, I knew that I was totally over it, and I was totally ready to move on.

Same kind of goes for Noir.

I had a crush -- a really big crush -- on Noir; and that was what spawned this blog and the BTF forum and everything else. And I'm totally certain that it's gone and I'm over it and there's so much out there that's better that I am a bit sad that I no longer find my most favoritist cartoon ever to be the most awesome anymore.

I want to reiterate that I will always like Noir...

But I don't love it anymore and I will probably not stress about "Noiriversarry" or "Noir Year's Eve" anymore. I have the Japanese BluRay set, and that's enough. I might spend more time with Bebop or X'amd or maybe something new. There's a lot of wonderful shows and animators and things to obsess over, and I'll have to look for them and make them my focus.

But I don't think I'll ever fall in love with a show like I did with Noir ever again. That's fine. I don't regret it; I cherish it. But it's done now.

*sigh*

Remember 10 years ago when I said I wanted a Hi-Def version of "Noir"?

In time for my upcoming 10th Noiraversary, guess what showed up at my door?

My last post about the end of "Noir Year's" and moving on and all that? Maybe that can wait a little bit...

No more Noir Year?

It's true, I haven't watched Noir since last New Year's...

There's a new Bluray remaster coming out in Japan in February, though, so I might actually resurrect the notion of "Noiriversarry" in May...

I posted twice in 2013. So this blog is pretty much dead. I'm hoping to resurrect the notion of "Kineska" soon, going back to what I originally planned (instead of drunken late-night rants on anime and Sophia Coppola films like it degraded in to). We'll see.

Highlights of 2013? The Michiko to Hatchin Bluray was awesome and may have displaced MADLAX as my #2. We'll see. A couple of minor gems have amused me, but nothing else outstanding so far.

Crunchyroll has been a must-have for me. Having such a library of fresh-from-Japan shows fulfills the "global DVR" itch I've had since I started here with all the fansubs. I haven't downloaded much at all in 2013 because of it. Mission accomplished, I'd say.

Onward! Luck and peace in the New Year to all.

BTF host issues coming to an end?

For any Bee Train Fans still checking here for status, my webhost is moving my site to another server, which should hopefully solve these annoying outages. It'll take about 4 hours for the DNS resolution to take hold, so I figure by Sunday night, it will be back to normal.

*sigh*

(2nd post of the year? really?)

Attempted "Noir Year's Eve"...

I started my yearly re-watch of Noir a little half-heartedly. I skipped around a bit (but found it hard to skip much). Unfortunately, some time after I put in disc 6, I conked out, and woke up to the dang DVD menu loop around 2am, missing the New Year entirely.

This may have been my last one. While I still like the show, I'm not getting anything more out of it after all this time (and all those re-watches). I suppose I've got a general lack of enthusiasm over all for a lot of things, and there's nothing new to pick up the slack. Oh well. Onward to a new year.

Sofia Coppala still commands my undying affection

I normally watch Lost In Translation when I'm really drunk. This time, I'm only kind of buzzed.

And I still love it.

There's a lot of slagging on this film, and Coppala's film's in general, that I really can't identify with. Not that I'm white-knighting her, but I think she's connecting at a level that really does work if your receptive to it.

Bill Murray's performance probably helps in this case because it's outstanding, but I'd like to give Sofia a little credit for it. Because like I've said in the past: I pledge my undying love to her and will serve her until my last breath.

I'm sure it's because I'm getting too old to attract the kind of girl I fantasize about. Despite my financial success, I'm rather wimpy in the confidence department. I really want to know what Bill Murray's character whispered to her at the end while the Jesus and Mary Chain song started up at the end. It was probably the secret that us old loser guys need to get anywhere anymore.

No, that's not it. I'm pretty realistic about the notion that it's too late for me, but still, that's why this movie really gives me something to gush over.

So, nothing new; and I'll keep thinking wistfully about Sofia Coppola no matter what reality deems appropriate for me.

Europe has been producing great animation...

...and I've been missing it.

I managed to see A Cat In Paris and it was delightful! A French/Belgian production with a fine hand-drawn aesthetic, modest humor, and a lot of gunfire for a kid's short film. Wonderful stuff.

Chico & Rita is still in my rental queue, but this Spanish film has been getting a lot of industry kudos.

There are series and shorts and full-length features that only make it over here in a trickle. If I were paying attention, I'd be able to find them and see them.

Time to start paying more attention!

Satoshi Kon died two years ago

...still stings.

Apparently his movie is stuck, unfinished, unfunded. That makes me very sad.

I don't think I'm going to do any commemorative viewing this weekend, as I'm in an extended "escapism" mood, and I don't feel like drowning in any emotions any time soon.

Panty & Stocking English Dub

I signed up to Funimation's subscription, though I think it's a tad pricey. But it's the best way to get Lupin-Fujiko and Eureka 7-AO legally... And they've released a preview of the Panty Stocking dub in English... And I love it! It's even funnier than the subtitles, as a little localiztion of curses and profanity goes quite a long way in this case. And by localized profanity, I really mean profane. And I'm infinitely amused.

Once again, fuck you Lars Von Trier

I've really got to stop watching his movies. Melancholia is pretty much straightforward about what's going to happen. Yet I still sat through it.

I'm not saying I want him to make happy-ending all-is-right-in-the-world movies. He's good at what he does and can make any damn thing he wants. I just don't want the emotional abuse anymore.

Another day, another DDOS

Apparently BTF has been down again, for hours. The host has been hammered by yet another DDOS, the sort of thing they say they're in the middle of upgrading to protect against. Annoying. Pity to those who are actually running income-generating sites out of that facility, I guess.

If I could find the right mix of "cheap" and "flexible", I'd probably explore other options, but I guess it's not really important enough to warrant the effort. Oh well.

Definitely unprecedented early BBQ

It's 80F on March 21st... Well, it is inland; here on the shore it's the low 60s thanks to a surface water temp of 48F. But still! I drove back from my brother's wedding with the top down and got a sunburn! It's been sunny and clear and warm for days now.

I really don't know what to do with myself... I'm not ready for spring cleaning, and I'm still kind of feeling hibernate-y and sleepy.

I suppose it won't last, and April will be the usual rainy-and-chilly as it's always been. So for now, I'm gonna grill a couple of steaks and be content with the day as I have it.

Another spring show to look forward to!

Somehow I missed this news, but Sayo Yamamoto is directing the Lupin III reboot!

Back in August I was (drunkenly) lamenting her disappearance since Michiko to Hatchin, but well then, here we are...

I started watching Leiji Matsumoto's Ozma last night as well. That's chock-full of old-school look & feel, I tell ya. A bit stiff, but full of great design and classic trope-a-liciousness. Should make a fun Saturday morning breakfast 'toon.

Haven't really dug deep into other news about new shows, but I'll keep my eyes open.

EDIT: OMG, if this is actually the trailer for the reboot, I... I...

...I'll be in my bunk.
